This song won the Oscar for best original song in 2007, from
one of my favorite films, Once.
Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová wrote and performed it in the film (the
scene is in the video below). It's
a beautiful movie, set in Dublin, about a musician who has a dream, but feels
stuck in his day-to-day responsibilities, and who meets a young woman who
inspires him.
I'm grateful to my friends Rob and Sarah for introducing me
to Glen's music with his band The Frames, which lead me to this movie. Glen and Markéta formed a band called
The Swell Season, and you should check out their music as well!
If you love music, and have not seen Once yet, I will
personally come to your house and show it to you. You need to see it.
(On a really funny side note, I found a video of their
acceptance speech, during which Markéta was cut off. Jon Stewart was hosting, and he was so sweet and let her
come back out to give her speech.
But the funny thing is that notorious name mispronouncer John Travolta
presented the award, and butchers their names! Not nearly as badly as Idina Menzel's, but it's
hilarious. You'd think the Oscar
people would've learned! Anyway,
here's that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx8yLvb0gZM)
